Goodell: "Overwhelming support" for 18-game season

08/25/2010 - Atlanta, GA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - An 18-game NFL regular season appears imminent following Wednesday's special league meeting, according to league commissioner Roger Goodell.
Goodell indicated that owners have not voted on the "enhanced season," but said there is "overwhelming support" for it.
"We want to continue to address a variety of issues...All of the questions and discussions focused on how we do it that's fan friendly. Fans want less preseason and more regular season," said Goodell, who indicated the switch from a 16-game slate could come to fruition as early as 2012.
The talk of offseason training schedules, the expansion of rosters and other nuances of the proposed format were also part of the meeting, and Goodell indicated he would take into consideration the impact on the health and safety of players with two additional meaningful games.
"We want to do this the right way and make it good for everyone, including the players, fans and the game in general. From our standpoint, we think we've moved this concept along. There's a tremendous amount of momentum for it and we think it's the right step to take," Goodell added.
This concept will be part of the ongoing negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement, with the old CBA expiring at the end of the upcoming season.
